How To Publish Your Ebook On Kindle, iPad, Nook And More

Do you want to learn all about how to publish your book on the Kindle, iPad, Nook and other distribution platforms?

This multimedia mini-course will teach you all about how you can publish your ebook and avoid pain, hassle and expense along the way.

***

2012 Update: Please note, I have now expanded this course and included everything you need to know in Secrets of Self-Publishing Success, in conjunction with NY Times bestselling author CJ Lyons.

***

In the last few months, Kindle ebook sales have overtaken paperback print book sales on Amazon.com. Ebooks are a growing percentage of total book sales and the price of ereaders continues to come down and they may even be free by Christmas 2011.

Some ebook authors are selling hundreds of thousands of books and even those people selling a lot less are getting their work out there faster and to a wider global audience than through traditional publishing.

Whatever your personal feelings about ebooks, you are not your market and your book could be selling to a global audience if you make it available as an ebook and start selling it now.

With the fantastic changes in technology, you can be selling your ebook on the Kindle store, the iPad or the Nook within days. It’s still important to write a great book, have it edited and use a great cover designer but the process for ebook publishing is now available to all.

I now have four ebooks selling on the Kindle and other ebook distribution platforms and recently went through the process for my first novel, Pentecost. I learned a lot along the way and share all that information with you in this multi-media mini-course.

Interesting article, but I used http://www.QBitPublishing.com who converted my work to Kindle\iPad format for free

HI Michael, this is not a conversion course – it is everything you need to know around digital publishing including things like cover design and how to sell. There is very little on the conversion.

i would love to buy this but can’t spend $39.99. maybe $19.99? i don’t have profits coming in yet. it’s only the marriott hotel for now and $40 is steep for me at the moment. just a suggestion.

Thanks Aleshia, but I do offer a lot for free already on this topic so you can check all of those resources out under http://www.thecreativepenn.com/publishing/ and scroll down to the ebook publishing section.

Here’s my take on how to make and sell an ebook based using my Amazon publishing experiment as an example:

Most of the images in the slides are clickable and provide additional guidance. The slides can be downloaded as a PDF.

I believe that this is going to become a very huge and growing market for many people for a long time. This may very well be a very good market to jump into. This is going to bring a lot of the people out there that weren’t into buying e-books into buying them. It will also bring in a huge amount of people that wouldn’t hear of you otherwise. Thank you for this post I am definitely going to have to purchase this and get more in the know!

Joanna, doesn’t amazon.com do this when one uses it’s service, as I have twice? Also, amazon offers a book to take an author step-by-step through the process. I have a copy somewhere.

Hi Frederick, The course is more of a behind the scenes of how to use Kindle KDP and Smashwords. I’m not doing it for people. Many are worried about how to do it, what to put in the fields etc so this course is a hand-holding through the process. I would say you’re not the market if you have already published on the Kindle. It’s more for newbies who want to be shown through the process.
Thanks, Joanna

Dear Joanna,
I have a childrens book already written, but am concerned about the art work on how to’s for Kindle, and more. Does your video tell me how to get my book together to hand in to publishers in order for it to be used on Kindle, etc….? I always do example books as you probably know, how do I do this for kindle and ipad..etc. Do you explain how I do this…or is this program mostly for marketing? Not sure.
Thank you,
Kellee

Hi Kellee, the course goes through how to use the back end of Kindle and behind the scenes at Smashwords as well as related issues like formatting hints etc, but it is not for heavily illustrated books like kids books.
However, just today, Blurb.com released some info about their book to iBook tools – and there is this page http://next.blurb.com/2011/02/17/how-to-make-an-ipad-photo-book/
Since kids books are basically more like photobooks with images.
I also have a Kindle formatting expert working with me now, Simon Cheshire – he is a kid’s book author so can definitely help you – details here http://www.thecreativepenn.com/ebookformatting/

Thanks, Joanna

Joanna, I want to publish an e-book which would largely be circulated free to a certain interest group – but if interest was high, it would also be sold. Is it then necessary to publish an e-book or should I just make a PDF. What are the advantages of an e-book in this situation?
Regards, Teigue Payne, South Africa

Joanna Penn November 17, 2011 at 9:39 am

Hi Teigue,
I would just use a PDF since it is free to make and circulate and then you could look at making it a Kindle or iPad book later. That’s what I am doing with my Author 2.0 Blueprint free to subscribers which sounds like what you are doing. Having an ebook on the Kindle (or other sites) is more about selling to people you don’t know who might be browsing for a read. Thanks, Joanna

Hi Joanna,
I am really interested in finding out more about the epub process. I’ve searched high and low for a basic to advanced type course but can find nothing. Sort of a ‘Zero to Hero’ type thing!

Are you aware of any?

Love your site by the way.

Sorry Ann, the top pic and bottom (padlock) is licensed with iStockphoto so you need to buy that. The Kindle with birds is Flickr Creative Commons so you can use that one.

Dear Joanna,
I’m interested in your $39.99 multi-media mini course on ebook publishing but it looks as though is is about 1 year old. Information is changing at such a fast pace that I wondered if your information was still relevant? I have found another course/webinar by Jane Friedman:

http://www.writersdigestshop.com/do-your-e-book-right-and-start-making-money-live-webinar-registration

This webinar will happen on May 17, 2012. Will you please address my concern at my email address?

Thank you,

Hi Anita,

Thanks for your email and although things do change, this course still contains publishing on Amazon & Smashwords which are the main indie publishing ebook routes. I have also recently updated it with KDP Select and also a video on using Scrivener to format your files – so it is not out of date.

However, I have also recently done a new course with NY Times bestselling author CJ Lyons
http://www.thecreativepenn.com/selfpublish/
It is $49 but contains all the info on print self-publishing as well + interviews with CJ and the numbers on how she sold 240,000 copies of her book.

So you might prefer that one.

Thanks, Joanna

1. Do your course will teach me publish an e-book has kind of my book that the pictures is much more than words?

2. Could I ask you about your recommendation for the size I should create for my e-book?

3. Is your course still updated for new site and technique….? I see that it published along time ago

4. How much I will spend to publish my e-book besides the cost for your course.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon!
Thanks so much.
Danny.

Hi Danny,

This course is the latest version – and it includes print and ebooks
http://www.thecreativepenn.com/selfpublish/
Kids books are a bit different so maybe 80% is the same, but there will be specifics for kids books we don’t cover.
The size of the ebook is related to the material you put into it, and pictures will make the file bigger which will impact your royalties.
Self-publishing ebooks is free with Amazon and Smashwords, but of course that doesn’t include cover design or formatting if you need it. But basically, it can be free + services.
I hope that helps – thanks, Joanna

Thank Joanna,

I decided the size of my e-book is the popular american size: 8.5 x 11 inches. But I still got a problem, I don’t know the resolution of my image that will be suitable with kindle fire, I’m confuse between 100dpi and 300dpi. What should I do, Joanna? And Do I have to convert the e-book from pdf to epub or mobi before publishing to amazon?

Thanks for your help and best wishes to you!
Danny.

Joanna Penn November 28, 2012 at 8:57 am

300dpi is usually the resolution you use for any images, so I would go with that. You need a .mobi for publishing to Amazon. Best to read the help at http://kdp.amazon.com for all technical questions

Hi, Really like your blog. I’m wondering is it possible to publish the same book on any emedia. For example: Let’s say I have written a book about dogs. Let’s assume the title is “Blue DOG and GreenDOG”. Contents are the same, too. I want to publish on nook and kindle. Is that a problem?

Appreciate if you can address. Thank you and keep up!

Hi Sam, I’m glad you like the site. In terms of your book, yes, if you hold the rights, you can publish anywhere. We all do :) So my books are on Kindle, Kobo, Smashwords, iBookstore, Sony, B&N Nook etc. Hope that helps.

I have an illustrated book completed in Adobe InDesign – made to PDF file. It looks as if most ebook publishers don’t accept illustrated PDF’s- so what would you recommend ?

Reply

Joanna Penn March 8, 2013 at 1:42 am

You can definitely do a ePub in colour – but you don’t publish PDFs for the Nook, ipad etc, it has to be ‘changeable’ on the screen. So see if you can output from InDesign to ePub format. Or check out BookBaby.com as they have conversion services from PDF now.

Hi Joanna,

Any suggestions on e-courses that may be available specifically tailored towards e-book formatting? I’m very interested in learning the ropes of how the formatting is done as a family member’s clients have requested e-book creation in a one-stop-shop.

Any feedback, tips, or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much!

Yvette

Hi Yvette – sorry, I just use Scrivener for formatting but I’m sure there are courses out there. There are certainly a number of books on Amazon about it too.
