Book Promotion: 5 Reasons Authors should be in Compilation books

by Joanna Penn on January 13, 2009

Compilation books are written by a number of co-authors on a subject. They might consist of interviews with the different people, or chapters written by them, or answers to the same questions by different people. Each person featured will have a bio or resource box where they can list their website and book/product name.

So why are compilation books so good for authors?

  1. You promote yourself! You can get your website and book name in front of a whole new audience by being in a compilation book. You can catch their interest with your story or answers to questions. You will also most likely be able to participate in future books if there is a series.
  2. Other people promote you. Each of the authors will generally have bought copies of the book at wholesale prices in order to resell them for a profit. Or they will be giving away to clients and friends. As people read the book, they come across you and check out your site.
  3. You can network with other authors. If you are in a book with other authors, you can email them and make contact. Most will not ignore an email from a co-author. Finding like-minded people can be encouraging, especially if they are across the world. You can also ask them if they would like to cross-promote. Some of these authors may even be big names in the literary world.
  4. You can step outside the genre of your book. Many compilation books are on wider topics, for example, entrepreneurship or internet marketing. You can still be a part of them by skewing your story to fit the topic, but still provising your resource box.
  5. You can make some money! As one of the authors, you may be able to buy the book cheaply and sell it as Retail price which can increase your income.

Here are examples of compilation books and possible opportunities for you too.
