Here's my latest book for authors!

Now my business has ticked into six figures, I wanted to share how that breaks down and how you can do it too.

Would you like to leave your job and make a living with your writing?

This book will show you how.

I spent 13 years working as a cubicle slave in the corporate world. I was miserable in my job and my creativity was stunted by the crushing daily grind.

Then I started writing books and blogging, using my words to create products and attract readers.

In September 2011, I left my corporate job to become a full-time author and creative entrepreneur and since then I've grown my business year on year – all based on my writing.

More importantly, I'm finally living the happy life I always wanted.

I'm not a Kindle or blogging millionaire and this is not a get rich quick scheme. But I will share with you how I make a six-figure income from writing books, blogging and marketing in an ethical manner.

This is the best time ever to make a living with your writing! Read on to learn more.

How is this book different from Business for Authors: How to be an Author Entrepreneur?

Business for Authors is essentially a manual for how to run a business. It's aimed at authors in a mature phase of their career, with several books and who already make some kind of living from writing. It contains things like how to do taxes and accounting, as well as building teams and production plans!

I've learned from feedback that it is perhaps a little too much, too soon, for many authors!

So, How to make a living is for authors in the phase before that. Authors who have one book, a couple of books or who are writing their first book, with an eye on a future that involves writing. It outlines how I make a living and directs you to lots more resources so you can take things further.

Please do let me know any questions below in the comments, and I hope you find the book useful. Thanks!

  • I read this post and went to the book. It was available at $4.70, not $2.99. That confused me and made me back off.

    • I presume you're not looking at USD, Venkatesh? It's set at US$2.99 in the US and £1.99 in UK and all other countries have different prices, but I wasn't going to list them all here. Sorry for the confusion.

  • I repeat: the listing for your book on Amazon.com says US$2.99, but the page itself says $4.70, with a "1 new from $2.99" link. Clicking on that last link made no difference - it went back to the same page. Amazon.in shows a price of Rs. 299, which works out to US$ 4.704 at today's conversion rate.

    • I think this has something to do with VAT and/or taxes in general. Amazon adds them on top of the list price depending on your country. For example (I'm in Finland and shopping on amazon.com) the price shown is $3.71.

I've seen this happens a lot on Amazon.

    • This really is based on being outside the US, Venkatesh. I'm sorry but I can't do anything about Amazon's site. The rupee rate is set separately.

  • I love your podcast, very inspirational for a first time author like me, I'm about half way through my first novel I'm looking forward to reading this. Kia ora from Gisborne!

    • Lovely Gisborne :) I had a very happy wine festival there once upon a time ... not that I can remember most of it :)
I'm glad you find the podcast useful - and remember, it just takes time. I started writing "properly" back in New Zealand in 2006/2007 and then moved to Oz. Nearly 10 years later, I'm making a living with it - time and consistent effort changes everything!

  • I've been looking forward to this book! Just bought a copy, as soon as I'm through it, I'll pop a review. Thanks for all the great work you've been doing.

      • As expected, the book was packed with the good stuff. I've left a review and will heartily recommend it to any authors who are wondering how to make money off their work.

        Thanks again!

  • Looking forward to getting stuck into this book... I always appreciate your down to earth approach amidst all the hype out there, and know you have sound advice to offer. :-)

  • Just ordered it. I wish you much success! You have been so helpful to me. Your consulting services are worth their weight in gold!

  • Congratulations on the new book, Joanna! I love your books (and podcast) and have recommended your public speaking and business for authors books to all my writer friends.

  • Got my copy.....This is perfect. I have one book out, working on another, and hope to (sooner than later) be able to make a living doing what I love. I'll be sure to leave a review too.

  • Got held up with other things, and finally bought the book today. Look forward to tearing (into) it :)

  • Hello, I am a novice trying to build up my art for writing. I have developed this intensity for writing and i thought it to be abnormal. i have over fifty books pending with brief prologues and titles but sometimes i get scared of publishing some of my completed works because i don't know what others might say.
