How To Turn Your Non-Fiction Book Into A Workbook

Making a living with your writing is all about multiple streams of income. So if you write non-fiction, consider turning your book into a Workbook edition.

Watch the video below or here on YouTube.

What should be in the Workbook edition?

There are two options:

  • Use exactly the same text and just add in lines or space for the reader to write their answers to your questions
  • Modify the material so you focus more on the questions, leaving the bulk of the text in the original book

How do you add the lines?

This is a print-only product. I work with a professional formatter and just use Track Changes on the Word doc to indicate where to add the lines. But you could do this yourself if you use formatting templates or Vellum.

What size is the workbook edition?

I use 5×8 format for my normal books, and then 6×9 for my workbooks.

  • I watched this video on this yesterday. Thanks so much. I will have to finish writing my book first and then create the workbook afterwards.

  • Thank you for the video. I was a little confused when I watched it because the book's subtitle 'A Companion Workbook' would imply to me that this workbook would be used in conjunction with the original work (bought separately), but the video made it seem that the entire transcript from the original book is contained within the workbook. I think it should be easy for your readers to understand what it is they are buying.

    All the best!!

  • Hi Joanna.

Firstly, thanks for all you do in the indie author space. I personally would not have been able to publish without your books and podcast.

My question is, when creating a workbook what kind of paper do you choose? I am mindful of pen leaking though the back of the page.

    Kind Regards

    lauren.

  • professionally published my book (the what and who) and now want to create a self published workbook to coincide (answer the how to) around its content.
