Vault Door

This is a guest post from Zoe Winters, author and Publetariat Vault Site Administrator.

For a while now larger publishers have wanted nonfiction authors to have a platform before they dealt with them. But with the success of fiction authors like Scott Sigler and JC Hutchins (through their podcasting first to build brand and audience), a light seems to have gone on over some publishers' heads with regard to fiction.

Now any author can dramatically increase his odds of commercial success with a strong platform.

Enter the Vault. The Vault is like e-Harmony meets publishing. It's the matchmaking service of the publishing world, bringing indie (self-publishing) authors and publishers together. The Vault is a database of books by indie authors which includes their current sales data, reviews, excerpts, synopsis, and the other data that matters most to mainstream publishing acquisitions pros and content producers.

It's a subscription-based service to the author, free to publishers and content producers (to ensure the largest number of searchers.) Publishers can enter in specifics about the type of book they are looking for and search a filtered list to see books that meet their requirements.

Many authors choose to self-publish hoping it will pave the way to a larger contract with a mainstream publisher, but until now there hasn't been an effective method to make this transition. The Publetariat Vault is a searchable showcase site that brings self publishing authors and publishers together. Authors in The Vault list their books, their current sales data, reviews, synopsis, excerpt, and other information required to entice a publisher to offer a contract.

April Hamilton, the creator of the Vault, has spoken at the O'Reilly Tools of Change conference as well as the latest Writers Digest conference, and Writers Digest dubbed her the “Leader of the Indie Author Movement.” This is big. Changes are happening in publishing and the Vault intends to be at the forefront of these changes.
