There are so many interesting things happening in the publishing world at the moment! It is an exciting place for those of us embracing new technologies and looking forward to getting our content out there…but for the established publishers it is a difficult time. Here are some news items you might be interested in:
- Big publishers are suffering in the downturn – Harper Collins delays pay increases, Simon & Schuster is laying off people, Random House is splitting up…
- Meanwhile, a new ebook publishing house opens in the romance genre. Galley Cat talks to Ravenous Romance who are selling ebooks for $4.99 and releasing them daily. Get your love fix here! The romance genre has annual sales of $1.37 billion, so even in a downturn it looks like a good bet for a successful new publishing venture.
- Great slideshow on Making the case for Print-on-Demand from Tools of Change – aimed at publishers, but worth a look for understanding why POD is not going away
- New media ways of reading books – Google Maps embedded into a geo-referenced ebook so you can follow the action in the real place. Very cool!
