Testimonials

“This seminar is an excellent start for anyone considering independent publishing as a future career direction and who wish to one day ‘make a living (and a life) from their writing'. The event was ideally targeted for both new authors who are yet to publish and those of us who are slightly further along, with one or more books already out. Joanna's fast-paced, information-filled sessions worked very well in combination with Orna's ‘author mindset' sessions using elements of psychology. In addition, Orna's free-writing sessions were incredibly useful to help focus the mind. Both of these unique perspectives contribute to an interesting and productive event. I learned a great deal but I also had time to network with other new authors, something I have not had the opportunity to do before. Thank you to Joanna and Orna for a fantastic event!” – Paul Ian Cross, after How to make a living (and a life) with your writing workshop

“I found this course to be great value for money. It gave me some practical easy-win next steps, but also a lot to think about in the longer term regarding the economics behind creating a business around writing. It was a very focused and well-run session. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is seriously considering trying to make a living as an author-entrepreneur.” – Taron Wade, after How to make a living (and a life) with your writing workshop

I've finally found my tribe. Though a previous workshop I attended (elsewhere) about traditional publishing and writing was informative it's atmosphere was forced and stuffy. I had a blast with Joanna and Orna learning about self-publishing and now know I Can do this! I learned. I laughed. I cried. I even peed my pants. Okay, maybe not the last one, but the information and atmosphere was so fun I didn't want to leave even a second early during breaks to beat the bathroom or coffee lines. If you are looking to be educated, supported, inspired, and make other writer and indie publishing friends there is no better place to start with than Joanna Penn and Orna Ross.” – Jennifer Gillham, after How to make a living (and a life) with your writing workshop

The day was enjoyable and well worth attending.” – Baeti Mary Mothobi, after How to make a living (and a life) with your writing workshop

“Being an ardent listener of Joanna's podcast I was not sure I would gain new information, but I couldn't be more wrong. I came away from the seminar with a plan of action that would have taken many, many months (or more!) without the knowledge gained from this day. Thank you both Joanna and Orna, for showing me a business opportunity that I can take action on immediately. If you are serious about making a business from your writing then this is one business expense that you really should make.” – Colin McCarthy-Stewart, after How to make a living (and a life) with your writing workshop

“Before I quit the law … I had to sit through countless interminable courses and presentations given in a dreary monotone by personality-deficient lawyers who knew nothing about their subject. The contrast today could not have been greater: I thoroughly enjoyed it and I’m very grateful for all your insights … I got significantly more than my money’s worth from you today.” – Jonathan Westwood, after The Guardian Masterclasses Secrets of Successful Self-Publishing

“I’ve just got back from the excellent How to build a business from your passion, and I am BUZZING! I even did one of those sideways jump kicks in the street… you know the ones, like in Singing in the Rain where they bang their feet together mid air, I feel THAT excited! … Throughout the course Jo[anna Penn] dropped in real life practical examples of how she created a lifestyle business doing what she loved … Jo questioned us throughout the day on our ideas and was always giving away tips for how we can make it work too, making it seem realistic, doable and like we’ll have a whole load of fun on the way.” – Jen Lowthrop, She Gets Around, after Lifestyle Startup: Build a business around your passion with EscapeTheCity.org

“Joanna was an excellent presenter, I felt she talked openly and honestly about her experiences in finding a business that was right for her and I really loved that Jo's story shows that persistence does pay off but only when you start to look deep inside yourself to ask what you really want. Having someone run the workshop who has tried a number of different things until they found their passion was inspirational and I really liked how Jo would challenge us as individuals to try to think creatively about how we could turn our own passions into something more. I have to say that her words stayed in my mind in the days after the course – which is when I had some of my biggest ‘ah ha' moments!” – Esther Bielawski, after Lifestyle Startup: Build a business around your passion with EscapeTheCity.org

“Through a combination of free and paid information, [Joanna Penn] provides expertise on navigating through new media. In addition, she writes novels, so she knows the challenges of marketing fiction successfully … Not only is her advice useful and specific, but she is also one of these chirpy, cheerful sorts that lets me know that I can fix my mistakes … she’s going to save me a lot of time, money, and heartache on my authoring, and she can do the same for you, too!” – Nadine Galinsky Feldman, author

Your clear-thinking approach removed much of the (terrifying) mystery from the process. Already, I've begun putting many of your suggestions to work while delving into the gold mine of information on your website. Wow! So much to learn. Your advice really helped me get started and I started following ‘The Creative Penn.' More great tips. (I love the podcasts!) I want to congratulate you on the great workshop you gave at GCWA. The content…was certainly presented and followed up in a most entertaining and inclusive way. I was particularly impressed by the way you managed to include absolutely everybody present, in responses. As a retired high school teacher I noted with pleasure that not one person ‘faded' during your talk. Your long Powerpoint display was also very helpful when I missed some of the things you said, and I loved those comic little incidentals in the display such as ‘tea break' and I was very impressed with the number of cross references you gave straight off the top of your head eg Andy's question about how to get his references filed without having to go through the tedious stuff himself; where to go if you've more money than time, to get a site put up for yourself. It was great, I hope you will come again and I hope that I can take the plunge and drag all my colleagues at Southern Shorties, with me” – George Lewis, after Gold Coast Writer’s Workshop

Fantastic energy, excellent useful information, clear and concise organisation, brilliant powerpoint presentation. Involved the group – appropriate workshopping/exercises. • I attended a presentation by Joanna Penn at a Brisbane Woman group about 2 years ago. Since then and with the help of Joanna's Author.2 course on Self Publishing I have successfully completed my 1st book - Success Is Simply Spiritual - and am now enjoying many personal, professional, and financial rewards . I also employed the services of one of her guests in the program - book designer Stephen Tiano - who is one of the most helpful people I have ever worked with.
I appreciate the information, connections and the expertise Joanna provided to help me become successful in spreading the word about my work - my book is now a world-wide resource to help so many more people than previously possible.
    Thank you Joanna
