Important Statistics for Authors

OLD POST ALERT! This is an older post and although you might find some useful tips, any technical or publishing information is likely to be out of date. This is important information for all of us as authors. We need to be aware of the changing face of book buying, how consumers find and buy books.

Here are some selected statistics from this informative post by Follow The Reader:

  • Most readers now get book information online. 67% of readers say they find reviews online vs. in traditional print media.
  • Online is the #1 selling channel: 23% of the market vs. retail chains at 21%
  • Of Kindle owners, people 50 or older are the biggest adopters, followed by 18-34 year olds
  • 57% of book buyers are female and they buy 65% of books (e.g. women buy books and they buy in volume)
  • Mystery/Detective and Romance account for more than half of all fiction people buy
  • While e-books are1.5% of the total book market, ebook sales grew 125% overall in 2008

Definitely read the full post as this is invaluable information that should shape behaviour for authors and publishers.

Perhaps we should be writing romance for over 50 year old women that is also available on the Kindle, and promoting online?

Making Information Pay

You might also be interested in the “Making Information Pay” conference material also mentioned in that post. As authors online, we all give information away for free but we still have to make a living!

********This week I am heading down to Sydney for the Writers Festival where I will be attending 2 workshops – one on writing non-fiction and the other on speaking as an author. Expect posts on that later in the week. I am also catching up with Dale Beaumont and hope to post some videos with him next week.

So there is lots going on! Back to my usual style of blog posts soon!

  • Apparently I need to switch over to writing Romance novels instead of fantasy. Unless I suppose I can write good fantasty stories with lots of romance in them.
