Scrivener does now offer software for Windows. It is still in beta, however, and I ran into an issue of having a half-day's work erased because the auto-save feature didn't work correctly. My fault, I know...should have plugged in my external hard drive first, but of course I did not.

Anyway, I'm back with handwriting and OneNote for the planning stages this year (NaNoWriMo). I think I'm going to use Yarny for writing the story. If worse comes to worse, I'll go to http://writer.bighugelabs.com/ and use that. It's always good when you're looking for simple, with no distractions.

My outlines include a one-sentence summary of the story and 3 sentences to describe the beginning, middle and end. I also describe the setting in vivid detail, sometimes even drawing maps for future reference because that's where I struggle the most. Occasionally I include a few character bios, but not often. If I plan too much before hand, I tend to get bored when actually writing. Half the excitment of writing is not knowing what's going to happen!

That being said, I have to stick up for the "organic" writers. They aren't always the last ones to climb the mountain! I've finished novels without an outline quicker than I've ones with outlines. It all depends on the story and the writer.

Like you I stalled in NaNo and I realize now that it was because I didn't outline. I'm a convert to the Snowflake Method and love it. The whole writing process has become smoother. Not only was I able to get my thoughts and story organized, but when I did my character synopses I discovered entire subplots and added in a nice twist when I found out one of my characters wasn't going to cooperate :).

Oh, and I highly recommend Scrivener! I just did a post about outlining and I briefly talk about how I use Scrivener in conjunction with the Snowflake Method: http://caethesfaron.com/fiction-friday-how-im-writing-my-latest-novel-using-an-outline

I'm a combo writer - I outline the big things, then let the in between stuff happen as it may. It keeps it fun and helps me remember where to end up.

Thanks for all of your continued resources!
