Authors often are not consulted by publishers because they&#039;re &quot;not professional designers,&quot; or &quot;don&#039;t understand,&quot; yet it is crucial that authors be heard by trade publishers.

You&#039;re research advice, above, is great. If you can locate specific covers that are good, and substantiate your opinions, you may be listed to.

I always have my agent specify &quot;right of cover approval,&quot; but, even that&#039;s not enough. Often, the cover is &quot;delayed&quot; until it&#039;s too late, then you get the &quot;it may delay the book&#039;s appearance&quot; argument, or &quot;we&#039;ll do better next time.&quot;

One of my best books, on an early presentation program, had a cover that would have been great for a book entitled, &quot;Agricultural Reform in the Balkans, 1939-1945.&quot; An awful cover. Completely killed any possibility of sales.

Morale? know what you want and fight for it...at the contract stage!

BTW, in the member area at Published and Profitable, there&#039;s a great interview with Kathie Dunn and Ron Hobart from Dunn Design, book designers.
